NATURA 2000 NETWORK

The Natura 2000 network consists of a series of biodiversity conservation areas in the European Union that include Special Conservation Areas and Special Protection Areas for Birds. In Spain, the network protects 1,468 Sites of Community Importance that cover in all a surface area of around 222,000 km2.

Through special protection and conservation areas, the Natura 2000 network aims to guarantee a favourable state conservation for a series of types of habitats and species within their natural ranges.
